Emulsifiers
Emulsifiers are the quiet enablers of natural skincare, making it possible for water and oil to come together in harmony. By binding lipophilic (oil-loving) and hydrophilic (water-loving) ingredients, emulsifiers create stable emulsions that remain smooth and consistent over time.
In natural formulation, two common types of emulsions are used:
- Oil-in-water (O/W): light and refreshing textures, where tiny droplets of oil are dispersed in water.
- Water-in-oil (W/O): richer, more nourishing blends, where droplets of water are dispersed in oil.
Beyond simply blending oil and water, emulsifiers play an important role in skincare. They help maintain the skin’s natural oil-water balance, improve texture and feel, and serve as carriers that deliver active ingredients more effectively. With the right emulsifier, a formulation becomes more than just a mix of ingredients — it transforms into a stable, caring treatment for the skin.
